Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to study idioms in Sanskrit. Sanskrit is one of the oldest
languages is considered the mother language of the Indo-European language family. There are
several myths about Sanskrit which prevail in society. Among them the most famous one is
that Sanskrit is considered to be a dead language. Nevertheless there are many reasons to prove
that it is not so. Even today, Sanskrit is spoken as a mother tongue in many areas in India. In
addition to that it is stated that Sanskrit is the most appropriate language to apply for computers
because it has a very logical syntax. The other reason to prove that Sanskrit is not a dead
language is seen in the usage of the language. Idioms are the part of the language which people
use commonly in regular conversation. Idioms do not have specific grammar rules. They are
originated by the usage of the language. Every language has Idioms. An Idiom is a phrase in
which the meaning is difficult or sometimes impossible to understand by merely looking at the
meaning of the individual words it contains. It is very important to have an understanding about
Idioms to be perfect in any language. But the problem is that very few people have conducted
research in Sanskrit Idioms. Therefore the purpose of this research is to study Idioms written
in Sanskrit. The research will help provide a good understanding about the common usage of
Sanskrit language and it will be prove that Sanskrit is not a dead language. This research will
be conducted using Sanskrit dramas and excerpts from classical Sanskrit literature.
