Abstract:
The aim and objective of this paper is to critically study the presence of an elephant in pre-independent and post independent philatelic history of India.
In pre independent Indian philately, postal stamps were printed on paper watermarked with an elephant’s head from 1865 to 1876. In 1895, Sirmoor, a feudatory state issued stamps featuring an elephant.
As far as post independent Indian philately is concerned elephant appeared on 2 definitive and 11 commemorative stamps as well as on some cancellations.
