Abstract:
Nepal is a buffer State between India and China. As Nepal is having 1000 Km open border with India, similarly it shares 750 miles border with China, although not open. Nepal also enjoys historical, cultural, economic and military pacts with both India and China. For India, Nepal is a very important buffer State. For this reason, Nepal may be reason enough for Chinese intervention in the South Asia. Again, due to such geographical position, Nepal’s role has become significant in forming a balance of power between the two top mighty nations in the Asian continent. The geographical proximity of Nepal and India has become instrumental in ensuring the close economic links. The trade between the two countries has considerably increased over the years . The remarkable economic development in China and India as also the flow of economic prosperity of Japan, Korea and Taiwan bear witness to this phenomenon. At present, India and China have come up as main contenders for information technology in the world. Apart from economy, both India and China are acclaimed for their all-round improvement in the armed forces. So there is least doubt that in economic as well as political fronts, the Asian continent has emerged as powers to be reckoned with in the new world order. India’s economic liberalization, modernization, technological development and her firm position in the international politics have inspired Nepal to maintain good relations with her.. It is beyond doubt that Nepal’s geo-political position and economic dependence will deter it from framing its foreign policy independently in future. So Nepal will have to maintain a balance between the two big giants. But China’s increasing interest in Nepal’s internal and external development has definitely posed a concern for India. With the introduction of new constitution in Nepal scope of co-operation as well as new areas of conflicts between the two have widened in many way. Keeping in view the above perspective the present paper seeks to analysis the Indo-Nepal relations from Geo-Political perspective.
