The Philosophy behind information resource management is to design inventory and control of all the library resources required to produce information. If standardized and controlled, these resources can be shared and re-used throughout the network libraries, not just by a single user or an application. Obtaining, storing, and processing information is critical to an organization’s success and profitability. Ongoing innovations in information technology challenge managers, practitioners and researchers to create and adapt to new policies, strategies, and solutions for information management. Library patrons in today’s environment expect access to electronic items as well as physical materials. Also, publishers are abandoning the traditional print model in favor of electronic formats which is less expensive for them to deliver and easier access to users in the library. Information based organizations depends on computer databases and information systems for their ongoing operation and management. Information resource management is a program of activities directed at making effective use of information technology within an organization. These activities range from global level information planning to application system development operation, and maintain to support the end user computing. A significant reason for inability to integrate information management activities is the failure to adequately define the information resource. What is that must be effectively managed. What are the concepts to the problem of managing collections in an organization which provides a basic ingredient for effective information resource management and control in building valuable source of information for the end user etc. are the highlighting points to be focused in this paper. |
