Abstract:
This is a Thesis written on the title of' A Critical Study of Cloud concept' for a
master's of Philosophy Degre in the Sinhala Studies department of Kelaniya University.
This Thesis consists of six chapters. At the begining of the Thesis, there is an
introduction of primary Sources of Cloud concept. And the remaining chapters are titled
as, Cloud concept and religion, the relationship inbetween Cloud concept and society,
Cloud concept and culture, and the Colud concept and literature finally there is a
conclusion by analyzing the above six chapters.
In the lirst chapter of this Thesis the descriptions given about the deities Indra,
Agni, Marutha. Rudra. Apam napat, Parjanya, Apas, Mithra. Waruna, Soma, and
Manduka are based on Sanskrit literature; and the descriptions given about the
Dhammameghaya, Megha venum and the Meghandakaraya eet; are based on Pali
literature. In the second chapter there is information about Cloud from the religions
such as Jain, Hindu, Muslim, Catholic. In the third chapter there is infonnation about
lay, clergy and animal world regarding their way of livelihood during the rainy season.
In the fourth chapter there is information about the Newyear rituals, the procession
culture, Vassupagamanaya, Pirith chanting, Shanthikarma, Art and Sculpture,
Saranabandhanaya, Bodhipuja and the roots of the names mentioned. In the tilth chapter
there is information taken from Sanskrit, Pali and Sinhala Literature text books. At the
end of the thesis there are conclutions given besed on above summarised information.
