Abstract:
Political participation is a basic concept in political science and scholars have defined the
concept in different ways. It may be defined as the actions of private citizens seeking to
influence or support government and politics. However, simply political participation means
that a person participating for political process under her/his personnel attitude and beliefs.
However, there is a discussion among the society about the women’s political participation
because the women’s political participation seems to be not impressive than the male political
participation. Anyhow the main objective of this paper is to identify the trends of women’s
political participation in present era. This study is based on secondary data, which obtained by
reports, research papers, relevant books and articles. Also content analysis used as for the
methodology. Finally the study reveals that there are many negative and positive trends of
women’s political participation such as there are political movement which conducted by
women’s to gain their rights, women’s are still in a lower level of participating for politics and
policy making procedures because their numbers are comparatively lower than that of men and
also some countries took positive steps to increase women’s political participation such as
introducing a quota system in Sri Lanka
