Countries which imported porcelain Products to Sri Lanka during 19th century: with special reference to mosaic art

Abstract

The specific objective of this research paper is to explicate the countries that imported porcelain products to Sri Lanka during 19th century with special references to Mosaic art at Karagampitiya Subodharamaya and Maduwanwela walawwa. Karagampitiya Subodharamaya has extended history from the king Parakramabahu VI (1412 - 1467 AD) and it faced to several changes during the colonial period of Sri Lanka. Maduwanwela walawwa was established during the period of 17th to early 20th century.A piece of art work created by placing coloured segments of tiles, porcelain, glass, stones, minerals, shells and coins in a pattern to create a picture is called Mosaic art. This art tradition has evolved over time from BC and Mosaic art, developed in various periods according to the subject and features.The majority of Sri Lankan Mosaic art is created with porcelain fragments. Some porcelain fragments with trade mark or with brand name of particular company and country could be found in Sri Lanka. In addition to the features of porcelain products, the country of origin could also be recognized. Corresponding to the collected data from field research and library survey methods it is identified, that Sri Lanka has imported porcelain products from England, Holland and China during 19th century. Further, it describes trade relationships between those countries and social, economic aspects of Sri Lanka.
