Abstract:
In the expanding global community English language occupies a unique place. To
achieve success in general society as well as in the academic scientific and research
spheres, the English language performs an incomparable function. It has become the chief
vehicle of the learned thought. It has become the source o_f creativity. It acquires and
spreads new human knowledge. It has also become the chief motivator and the facilitator
in bringing about peace among humanity. Hence the importance of spreading knowledge
of English language to the young is a must.
In the system of education in Sri Lanka, a child spends about 13 years at school. While
studying, he is able to gain a sufficient mastery in the English language too. But the
attainment level in English of the government secondary school is low. The objectives in
this study are to discover the facts affecting that situation and proposing the remedies.
For this study I have selected 60 schools in the Galenbindunuwewa educational zone in
Anuradhapura District as the sample.
In this research, I have planned to apply the methods Survey, Case study, Comparative
and the relevant techniques for the methodology. Up to now I have discovered that these
facts affect this situation.
I. Lack of motivation to study Engl ish.
2. No properly devised text books for English.
3. Insufficient awareness of the importance oflearning English.
4. In sufficient use of correct methodology by the teachers.
5. Lack of inspiration, motivation and encouragement on the part of society at large.
I firmly believe that plausibility of these facts can be proved and other facts can be found
through other studies. Further more I will be able to make suggestions to raise the
attainment level in English of the government secondary school.
